The Columbus KTC 10-day Meditation Challenge: A "How To" Guide

We know meditation is good for physical and mental health. But how do we start a new daily habit so we can get these benefits?

Columbus KTC’s 10-Day Meditation Challenge will help you make a Daily Meditation Plan and stick to it for health and well-being.

Here’s how it works: You commit to meditate daily for 10 days. An hour, 30 minutes, 20 minutes, 10 minutes – it’s not the time, it’s the DAILY commitment that counts. You log your daily meditation minutes on your Meditation Marathon page, which adds it to our community total. Our goal as a community is 1000 minutes of meditation and every minute you log gets us closer to that goal.

Help us raise rebuilding funds: To support your commitment - and help KTC raise rebuilding funds – you can ask friends and family to “sponsor” your participation in the 10-Day Meditation Challenge.

Your sponsors also can join in and learn meditation themselves. See “Learn with Us” below.

Learn with Us
We provide an initial 60-minute Learn-to-Meditate Session on Day One of the challenge.

Learn the “why” of meditation and easy, basic techniques, and make your Daily Meditation Plan.

Meditate with Us
Starting on Day Two, we will provide a 60-minute Daily Check-in and Support Session to give tips and pointers – and give you a chance to meet your daily meditation goal by meditating with our group!

Each Support Session has a theme and will be led by a trained KTC meditation instructor.

It will include a refresher meditation instruction, a check-in on how you’re doing, and short meditation periods to help you meet your daily goal.

Setting Up Your Meditation Plan
We know meditation is good for us, but it’s hard sometimes to start a new habit.

Here are some tips to setting up your Meditation Plan:

- Set a Realistic Goal. Start out with a small amount of time – 10 Minutes per day. It’s easier to make a daily commitment when the meditation period is short.

- Look for a Good Time. A lot of us have natural “breaks” in our day – after getting up; after breakfast, after finishing a task, after a walk or run, after work, after supper, before bedtime.

Take a look at your day and see when you might “piggy-back” some meditation
time into a natural break.

- Make Your Mark. Track your progress by making a mark on your calendar, showing you accomplished your meditation commitment. Some Activity apps on smart watches and smartphones also allow you to log your daily progress.

Added incentives. We also hope these activities will help you meet you daily meditation commitment:

- Every night at 7 PM Eastern Time from Saturday Nov. 7 through Monday Nov. 16, we will have a one-hour class that will include at least 20 minutes of meditation.

It’s an easy way to meet your commitment and meet others who share your wish to make meditation a life-long habit.

- Bring Family or Friends. Activities are always more fun when you have a buddy. Try texting friends and family and encourage them to join you in the meditation challenge – or donate to Columbus KTC to support you in your challenge.

- Join a Team. For fun, we’ve set up meditation “teams” to foster a little friendly competition for our meditation event.

We hope you and your team-mates will keep each other encouraged through texts or emails and reporting your progress here on our “Meditation Marathon” site.

We look forward to seeing you “on the cushion” with us nightly during the 10-Day Meditation Challenge. May all beings benefit from the work we’re doing to benefit our minds, our community and our world!

Teams

You can form your own team or join one of our “Five Banners” teams. Columbus KTC is known for its colorful Tibetan Prayer Flags, which are printed on banners of five different colors.

Each color represents a different type of wisdom:

The Blue Banner of Mirror-Like Wisdom

The Yellow Banner of Equanimity Wisdom

The Red Banner of All-Connecting Wisdom

The Green Banner of All-Accomplishing Wisdom

The White Banner of All-Clarifying Wisdom
